Santhebennur Pushkarani
Location
Santhebennur Pushkarani is a historic pond (pushkarani / kalyani / local “Honda”) located in the village of Santhebennur in Channagiri Taluk, Davanagere District, Karnataka, India. It lies about 22 km from Channagiri town and around 40 km from Davanagere city.
History & Cultural Significance
-
The pushkarani was constructed in the 16th century by a local chieftain Hiriya Hanumantappa Nayaka (son of Kengappa Nayaka). It was built as part of a Rama temple complex and named Ramthirtha by locals.
-
A central pavilion called Vasantha Mantapa (also known as Karanji Mantapa) was built to celebrate military victories and to serve as a ceremonial center.
-
The site later saw influences from different rulers, including additions like a musafirkhana (traveler’s rest house) built by Bijapur-era commanders, reflecting a blend of architectural styles.
Architecture & Structure
-
Size: Approx 250 × 240 feet with a depth of over 30 feet.
-
The wide stone steps (ghats) on all sides lead down to the water, making the pond accessible throughout the year.
-
Around the tank were originally eight ornate mantapas (towers) — only six remain today.
-
The central Vasantha Mantapa features Indo-Arabic architectural styles — arches and domes showing Islamic influence, while pillars and detailed carvings reflect traditional Indian design. When the pushkarani is full, the pavilion seems to float on water, creating a picturesque scene.
Spiritual & Social Importance
-
Pushkaranis are sacred waters associated with temples in South India. Santhebennur Pushkarani has long been used for ritual bathing, festivals, and spiritual activities, especially around the adjacent Rama temple.
-
The serene water body also acts as a community gathering place, where locals and visitors spend peaceful time, especially during festivals and traditional celebrations.
Visiting Today
-
The site is well-known as a tourist attraction in the Davanagere district and is featured on the official district tourism list.
-
It can be reached by road from Davanagere, Channagiri, and nearby towns. Regular buses and private vehicles serve the area.
